ECDO: Exothermic Core-Mantle Decoupling - Dzhanibekov Oscillation

Status: Leading Edge Verdict: Open question

The claim: Periodically, Earth's core and mantle decouple, and the mantle and crust tip about 104° to a new rotational state before later returning, causing the global floods described in many flood traditions and, the author argues, recorded in ancient monuments.

Where the evidence stands: ECDO is set out by its author, The Ethical Skeptic, in online articles (first hypothesis published in 2020, consolidated in May 2024) and a 2026 book. We did not find a peer-reviewed paper that presents or tests it. Mainstream geophysics recognises large true polar wander events, but it has described them as unfolding over millions of years. No study we found has tested the specific mechanism. Labelled Leading Edge, with the question open.

Background

The name combines two ideas. 'Exothermic core-mantle decoupling' is the author's proposal that heat-releasing changes in material at the core-mantle boundary (the D'' layer) are under way and lubricate a separation of core and mantle. 'Dzhanibekov oscillation' refers to the intermediate-axis effect, the sudden flipping of a spinning object about its middle axis, first noticed in space by cosmonaut Vladimir Dzhanibekov. The author links the theory to recent ocean warming, a weakening dipole, flood traditions and features of the Giza pyramids. This page summarises the proponent's case in our own words, then the relevant mainstream research. It does not treat any event as expected or imminent. See also Rapid crustal displacement.

Proponents' main arguments and cited evidence

  • The author proposes that the outer rotating body (mantle and crust) can shift its rotational state by about 104° along roughly the 31st meridian east when the core's magnetic coupling weakens, then return later. [1]
  • The author cites a weakening geomagnetic dipole, recent rapid ocean heating and methane trends as consistent with exothermic changes at the core-mantle boundary. [1][2]
  • The author points to erosion features on the Khafre pyramid, which he interprets as evidence of a long-lasting ancient ocean inundation, and to a widely reported Y-chromosome bottleneck about 5,000-7,000 years ago, as possible signs of a past catastrophe. [1][3]
  • Large reorientations of the solid Earth (true polar wander), including a proposed roughly 90° 'inertial interchange' event, are accepted in the mainstream literature, so the general idea of reorientation is not outside physics. [4]

The mainstream scientific position and its evidence

  • Mainstream reviews describe true polar wander as slow, mantle-convection-driven reorientation over millions of years, not a turn completed within a human timescale. [5][4]
  • The Y-chromosome study the author cites (Zeng et al. 2018) explains the bottleneck with a social mechanism: competition between patrilineal kin groups. [3]
  • The measured dipole decline is about 9% over 200 years. Agencies attribute it to ordinary outer-core flow, and the field is currently about as strong as its 100,000-year typical level. [2]
  • Present-day motion of the spin axis is fully explained by measured ice and water mass changes, with no unexplained component that would point to core-mantle slip. [6]

What evidence would help settle it

What evidence would help settle it: publication of the mechanism with quantitative predictions, for example the expected torque, energy, timescale and seismic or geodetic precursors, so it can be peer-reviewed and tested. Also needed are independent dating of the proposed inundation evidence, and seismic imaging of the D'' layer checking for the proposed decoupling material.
